Who Does External Linking Really Well?

I'm getting started on a test to see if and how adding helpful & trustworthy external links to articles helps them rank better. I've seen some conflicting studies on it so I figured I'd test it myself on a few sites. I'm looking for five or 10 sites that do external linking well including who they link to, what their anchor text looks like and how the linked content relates to the article topic (promotional, informational, research-based studies, only .govs and .edus, etc.). Can you recommend any sites that you think do external linking well? If you share your recommendations, I'll share the test results with you once the test concludes in the next 4-6 weeks.
