Why AI Will Inevitably Kill Content SEO and the Only Solution
With the rise of AI you can get most of your answers from AI overviews, ChatGPT, etc But where did the AI learn all of its knowledge? From the content that publishers and SEOs spent hours to learn and write In OpenAI's own documentation they have written: > OpenAI’s foundation models, including the models that power ChatGPT, are developed using three primary sources of information: (1) information that is publicly available on the internetIn OpenAI's own documentation they have written: OpenAI’s foundation models, including the models that power ChatGPT, are developed using three primary sources of information: (1) information that is publicly available on the internet If no one ever wrote content, how would AI have learned to provide answers? Did content sites give permission to AI companies to scrape their content, learn from it and then provide it to users for commercial purposes while profiting themselves, without paying the publishers who actually wrote the content? Also, with the rise of zero-click searches less users are clicking on to actual sites. Combined with Google's latest stance of not allowing sites to make money from affiliate marketing, what incentive is left for writers to publish content? This will inevitably lead to good content no longer being published, who wants to spend time researching, learning and adding expertise to an article for it to be used by Google in their AI overview or for OpenAI to train their LLM using your content and then provide it as an answer to their users It will just be a game of website owners using AI to rewrite, repurpose and train AI the best they possibly can to produce content at scale The bigger issue this creates is the lack of expertise and knowledge that will be available, because no one will be actively trying to add something new because what's the point anymore? People will only trust video because that is where people will be able to see and know that a real expert is speaking about a topic, which is why video (YouTube) will grow Also, Google's stance on just ranking high authority websites with massive backlink profiles doesn't work either because they could also just be using AI to write the content and because they now have less competition they will put in less effort and produce lower quality content You can see exactly where this will lead to, the only solution is for regulations around AI companies like OpenAI, Perplexity, Gemini, etc freely being allowed to train their LLMs on content that is available across the internet (not every writer is going to know how to add a disallow directive inside of their robots.txt to prevent LLMs from accessing their site) to be used for commercial purposes whether it is AI overview or answering questions on their own platform such as ChatGPT tl;dr: As AI continues to advance and is allowed to train their LLMs using content across the internet freely, they will continue to use it for commercial purposes on their own platforms such as ChatGPT or Google using AI overviews, this will lead to no incentive for writers to produce high-quality content which will lead to a decline in writers creating high-quality content, thus killing written content as a trustworthy platform to acquire unique high-quality information2
