How to baseline current search placement and measure progress?

Hello everyone! I'm looking for a good way to baseline what my current search engine placement is for some basic keywords I'm aiming to target. I'd like to do this before I start using SEO plugins for Wordpress and seeing how I progress. And then obliviously check it after a couple months of work to measure the effectiveness of what I'm doing. What are some people's suggestions???
