How Do You Handle Clients Who Are Extremely Resistant to Change?
I’m working with a client right now who runs an e-commerce site, and I feel like I’m banging my head against a wall trying to make some critical changes to improve their SEO and user experience. Their homepage is a nightmare with over 1,800 words crammed into text-heavy sections that read like someone pasted a blog post across the page. There are some images and product blocks scattered in, but it’s overwhelming and far from user-friendly. I’ve recommended a more modern, streamlined approach: a large hero image, clean product categories or carousels, and marketing flyers that make it easy for users to navigate. Most of the long-winded text could either move to a separate landing page or be cut altogether, especially since it’s redundant with other pages. The problem is, they’re completely resistant. They’re clinging to content created by their previous SEO team (outsourced to a really shitty and cheap SEO agency from India), which is packed with AI-generated fluff, awkward grammar, and bizarre formatting. There’s bold text in random places, ## symbols in headings, and plenty of unnecessary clutter. I’ve explained multiple times that this approach is outdated, likely hurting their rankings, and definitely turning users off. Still, they’re stuck in the “if it worked before, why change it?” mindset. Even though in the last 10 months their site has been dropping like a stone. Now I’m at a crossroads. How do you handle clients who are unwilling to let go of outdated, low-quality content? How do you educate them without coming across as pushy, set realistic expectations, and, most importantly, keep your sanity intact? If you’ve been in a similar situation, I’d love to hear your advice or war stories. Let me know how you handled it!5
