Happy New Year to the World’s largest SEO community!
We want to wish you all a great new year in 2025 - one that will no doubt be an interesting new year with lots of changes, advancements and opportunities already in the works. Here at r/SEO we are doubling down on our commitment to creating a community of discussion, learning, support and debate around all topics with SEO at the heart. That means our renewed approach to tackling spam. We know how much our members invest in sharing their advice to other members and especially those new to SEO - both providers and consumers alike and nothing ruins it like self promotion. There has been a strong series of campaigns against the SEO community - both in the foreground and the background to try to to control and use the conversations to some individuals and specific brands that undermines the hard work put in by the folks who make up the back bone of this community. And the harder we fight that spam - the better this community is doing. From our 30 day performance window - we are seeing the busiest days AFTER removing more spam entries. # How you can help Flag spam - we promise to get to it faster. # Specific Types of Spam we’re fighting Apart from the old school, regular domain drops/link farming, there are the worst of Reddit spam: the Low/Single Karma bots set up to create fake questions, mentioning SEO tools etc. There is nothing more soul destroying than banning these because they are the automated foot soldiers of the main spammers - it takes longer to ban than to create. # Minimum Karma Needed to Post We're trying a minimum Karma requirement to post to combat bot Q&A spam # Fake Case Studies Or as we call them “look how great we done” - these are often vague accounts void of actual technical or actionable detail about how someone made something better than nobody asked for. These are not real case studies that are of benefit to the community # Google Hate Posts We aren't Google. We understand that a lot of SEOs lose traffic during Google updates but this is a community of SEOs who mostly work with Google results - trying to run a campaign to ruin Google is better off on De-Google or … anywhere else really. While its important to create a space for people to talk openly about things that affect the community - trying to kill SEO doesn't actually help the community. This is a grey area, sometimes we’ll get it right, sometimes we’ll get it wrong - we’re trying to find the right way - your feedback is very helpful in this and all facets of spam defense. SEOs on r/SEO didn't create the businesses that got hit - and have been here to help. # Off-community engagement Please don't announce new products or tools or websites or ask people to DM you. If its for the community, then build it IN THE COMMUNITY. Posts asking people to engage outside or in DMs will be removed Mods Make mistakes and Mods get better with your feedback and flagging. If its not immediate, it might mean we’re trying to work out the right thing to do. Sometimes we don't want to kill conversations that people have put their effort into and equally we don't want to reward the narcissism and anti-community outcome that spam really is. We want to wish you all a great new year in 2025 - one that will no doubt be an interesting new year with lots of changes, advancements and opportunities already in the works.1
