Ajit Singh was a pivotal figure in India's struggle for independence, born on February 23, 1881. He was the younger brother of Sardar Kishan Singh and uncle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Singh's educational journey took him to DAV College in Lahore and Bareilly College, although he dropped out of the latter. Singh's involvement in India's freedom movement began in 1905, when he and his brother worked in famine-stricken areas, providing aid and support. His powerful oratory skills and leadership led to his arrest and deportation to Mandalay jail in 1907 for leading the Pagri Sambhal Jatta, a peasant agitation. After his release, Singh attended the Congress session in Surat and founded the Bharat Mata Society, a revolutionary organization. He traveled extensively, establishing networks with people fighting for India's liberation and meeting influential figures like Lenin, Trotsky, and Mussolini. Singh's later years saw him move to Brazil, form ties with the Ghadar Party, and attempt to enlist Indian soldiers in the British army. He was imprisoned in Italy and Germany until his health deteriorated, prompting his colleagues to pressure Jawaharlal Nehru for his release. Singh returned to India, but his health continued to decline, and he passed away on August 15, 1947, the day India gained independence.
