PSA- Never cancel a (Uber/ Ola/ rapido) ride to go directly
Yesterday night, I had booked an Uber auto to go home. When I sat in the auto, the driver told me to cancel the ride and go directly. I insisted that I was paying cash anyway and I didn’t want to go with him if I had to cancel the ride. It was already pretty late so it felt unsafe to travel without tracking and safety features. So I get down, and the driver starts screaming at me. He says that you people don’t care about us and our livelihoods getting affected because of these companies. I book a different auto but the first driver refuses to leave and stands nearby staring at me and talking to some people. When the second auto arrives, before I can get in, the first auto guy takes him to the other side of the road and says something to him. He keeps talking to him for a good 2 min and I don’t know wtf I’m doing, standing on the other side of the road, just wanting to reach home safely and not wanting to get into this second auto anymore. I cancel the second ride and go inside the building where I had left from. I wait inside for about 20 min until I decided that there is nobody outside and book a cab to go home. I don’t care who says what, DO NOT EVER agree to cancel a ride and travel no matter what. While I agree that my feeling unsafe was linked to not agreeing to cancel the ride but it’s always better to avoid travelling with people who don’t see the best interest in your safety late at night. Yes it is terrible that these companies take a large percentage of the ride fees, but it is not my problem to solve late at night as a female commuting in India.2
