Earlier Chilika was having big port cities (like Palur, Chelitola etc) but in the course of time these port cities lost its glory. The area of expanse of present day Chilika never remains same round the year. In summer, the area of expanse comes down to around 950 sq km. Today, the practice of boat fabricating( mostly flat boats having not more than 2ft depth which can float in swallow waters) still go on in Mangalajodi, which is the chief place for such work in the area. Country boat making in the village has been a thorough practice for a really long time and the craftsmanship and expertise has passed from one age to another. Fishing societies living around the lake rely upon the boat producers of Mangalajodi.
