  • To Mainland People in the sub, dont get offended being called "Mainlander"

In Northeast India, "mainland" is simply a term to describe the large part of India that isn’t Northeast. It mirrors how the rest of the country constantly generalizes us as “Northeast” in media and politics. If they can lump us together, we can have a term for the rest too. Some argue "Northeast" is just geographical, but in the Indian context, it carries cultural and political baggage. Using "mainland" helps Northeasterners recentralize themselves in their own psyche and balances the narrative. The term isn’t offensive, just practical. It’s far milder than any racial or political labels and communicates the idea clearly. It's even spread beyond the English-speaking crowd, so it’s here to stay.
