How do you know if you can work?

I've never worked and my family has always told me I'm mentally disabled. I have some orthopedic problems so at home I prefer to lie down most of the time. I can't umagine myself sitting down 8 hours a day - the pain in my legs and back will be great. But generally: If you have been long-term unemployed, how do you know if you're capable of work?
