Why every NEET should read "Oblomov"
I wanted to share a book recommendation that might resonate deeply with many here: Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov. It’s not just a novel, it’s a mirror held up to a life of inactivity, wasted potential, and the consequences of letting passivity consume you. Oblomov, the main character, starts with promise--a bright young man with a future. But as you read, you see him sink deeper into a state of lethargy, inertia and avoidance. He dreams big, makes plans, and imagines himself achieving greatness, yet he never lifts a finger to actually do anything. He clings to comfort, avoids risk, and convinces himself that tomorrow is a better day to begin. Sound familiar? The tragedy of Oblomov isn’t just his wasted opportunities, it’s how empty his life is. He isolates himself, alienates people who care about him, and ultimately finds himself drowning in regret over a life wasted. His story isn’t romantic or poetic. It’s bitter, bleak and profoundly sad. Oblomov's idleness comes from fear, perfectionism, and a lack of purpose--the paralysis of wanting to do something meaningful but being too afraid or overwhelmed to even try. By the end of the book, you see what happens when you surrender to this mindset: life does pass you by. Time doesn’t wait for anyone, and opportunities you could seize today may not be there tomorrow. Reading Oblomov is like getting a slap in the face. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a rut, if you’ve ever wondered what it might take to break free from inertia, this book might give you some perspective. It’s not easy to read Oblomov and see shades of yourself in his character. It’s even harder to accept that his story might be yours if nothing changes. But you still have time to write a different ending. Take it from me, read this book. Reflect on it. Then get up, do something small today, and keep building from there. Don’t let life slip away like Oblomov did.2
