Why so much hate for Kharra?
Nagpur-Kharra Varanasi-Banarasi Paan, Zarda Mumbai-Mawa, Gutkha Kolkata-Haji Ali Zarda Delhi- Rajnigandha, Tulsi Pan Masala Bihar & Jharkhand-Khaini Gujarat- Moti Khaini My take on this- People in central India (Vidharbha and Some parts of MP) can be seen eating kharra. Now people from all the income levels eat this but it is more prominent amongst middle and low income group males and females because it's cheaper (mind you there are expensive kharra's available as well). It's mainly raw tobacco. Cigarettes are also processed tobacco which is consumed worldwide. So why specifically look down upon Kharra? Its equally bad for health as cigarettes (or maybe is more unhealthy). The antics of spitting it at public spaces is bad agreed. 🛑Let me give you an example of Lucknow. I worked there for 2 years and people eat masala there and spit it wherever they want. But people (even women) don't really look down upon this. They say it's been a nicotine bump since ages and even the older maharajas there used to consume it. The whole point of it is that just because its local gutka or something doesn't qualify it to be class-less. Smoking is equivalent. I don't smoke or eat kharra btw and I don’t promote it.4
