Hacks you should know about Mumbai local

This is for Western line. - To know the train timing prefere updated version of apps like M indicator and Yatra. It will also tell you fare of going from one place to another - A return journey ticket is valid for 24 hours. It is useful for travelling from point A to B and back to point A. - Also if you get the ticket today to go to suppose Andheri, and you will come back tomorrow, you can use return ticket. - On weekend the return tickets are valid for 48 hours. So if you get a ticket on Saturday it's valid till Monday midnight. - In Western line, platform number one is at the west side. So if you want to go to suppose Dadar West, locate platform one and exit from there. And if you want to go to east, go for the opposite exit. - There are different queues for first class ticket and second class ticket. The long queue is usually for second class so if you want to purchase a first class or AC train ticket you can directly go to the counter ditching the long queue. PS: sometimes there is small queue for first-class don't be a line cutter. - If you are going to travel most days of month, like for job or college, then opt for pass instead of tickets, it's cheaper. - For students, railway provides concession on travel, you can collect those concession forms from your college admin office. Your travelling expenses cut down to more than half. - As a student when my pass expired and I had to get ticket I used to get return ticket so that I can use it for two days of return journey, saving my pocket money. Like if there is a crazy ass queue for concession line and for a week you couldn't get it. Then get return ticket on day one, keep it safe. Then next day get a single ticket and use previous day's return ticket for return journey. - First and last coach of AC local are reserved for ladies. - In normal local, there are three coaches reserved for ladies one in the back, one in front, one in middle. Ask canteen guys they will giude you better as to where this coaches come, making like easy. - A fast train starting from Virar will stop at all stations up to Borivali (sometimes even Andheri) and then skip slow stations. - Fast train starting from Churchgate are slow up to Mumbai station (except for peak hours) and then skip slow stations. - Slow train stop at all stations. - If travelling from Virar to Ram Mandir make sure that the train irrespective of will take a halt or not (it sometime doesn't) - Indicator display no of caches, last station, time and arriving minutes. 15 D 11:39 04. 15 coach, Dadar local, arriving at 11:39 in four minutes. - A slow train starting from Borivali will stop at all stations till Andheri and then skip slow stations (Ram Mandir is dicy here too) - Andheri station has a connecting bridge for metro station. - Dadar (Western) has a connecting bridge for Central railway. - AC trains have queues to board trains, better maintain them (log pagal hote hai literally, don't mess with them) - In peak hours if you are travelling to a station, avoid getting in train that has it as a last station because crazy public will board a running train to get seats. So if you want to go to Andheri in evening and are travelling from Virar or Borivali, opt for a Bandra, Dadar or Churchgate train instead of Andheri local (trust me it's for your own good) - Goregaon station is where you can go to board Harbour line trains. It's a common connectivity point. - If carrying a heavy bag make sure you hang it in front. This assures you not being thrown away by the crowd, your stuff not been stolen and your safety (trust me) - If you want to keep your bag on the stands be polite while asking for help, you don't know who will just reject it just because your tone was not nice and then you have to make way through the crowd and do it yourself. It's not fun. - People claim seats, as too if someone is getting down then you get that seat but in ladies you follow hierarchy and even if you claim window seat you will get the forth seat (yaha aise hi hota hai) - The long seat at the end of the coach in meant for 8 passengers in but in rush hours 9 to 10 people settle there, not in first class there will be only 8 people sitting there in first class, don't go and argue you will be cursed in English. Dheet ho, toh galiya sunn ke baith jao. - There are reserved seats for elderly. There is a sing indicating them, avoid sitting there if the train is empty and you have option. - Don't get in and stand in the passage area if you are supposed to get at later stations, bahut glaiya padegi, chup chap andar Jake khade rehna. - Andheri metro is better option than Andheri busses/ rickshaws, no traffic, on time, cost effective. - Carry an extra napkin during rains, for seats. You'll thank me for this. - Fast stations: Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander, Vasai, Virar. - God save you if you want to board a train at peak hours from Malad and Nallasopara. Happy journey! PS: Add something if I have missed
