Can anyone give a description of the downfall of the Mithi Nadi

It has been said by the people of Mumbai especially those whose many generations have lived in Mumbai that the Mithi Nadi was one of the cleanest rivers with crystal clear waters and abundance of water life. Where did we go wrong?
