Which brake to use while riding a bike?

I just started learning how to ride a bike yesterday on a Hero Passion Pro and wanted to know which brake to use while riding. Some articles I’ve read online suggest using the front brake, but my dad advised using the rear brake. Do you have any other tips for a beginner rider?
