Mangalore cultural observations after 27 years
Following up on my previous post on infrastructure this is my observation visiting Mangalore after 27 years. I left Mangalore in 1997 at age 17 to United States. 1. Lot more men and women wear casual western clothing on streets ( no lungi, dhoti etc). Lot more salwar kameez. In the 90s, majority of women wore sarees. 2. I saw lot more women wearing burqas compared to the 90s. 3. Catholic wedding are more traditonal and indian now. Saw people wear lungi dhoti, saw traditonal village traditions at a roce veremony. Lot of sarees in weddings. Bride wore sarees compared to western clothing back in the 90s. 4. Very rarely see couples holding hands hugging etc in Mangalore this is similar to 90s. 5. Men used to hold other men hands in 90s looks like this is not the case anymore. 5. It seems like local Mangaloreans are financially well. Most menial jobs such barber shops etc are by northern Indians. This wasn't case in the 90s. However in the 90s construction was done by non local Gowda. 6. Lot more women drive two wheelers and four wheelers when compared to the 90s. 7. Very few drunks on the streets these days 8. A lot of people speak English.4
