Maintaining Kolhapuri chappal

Hello, I have a dark tan polished Kolhapuri chappal. I maintain it with oiling and other things. However, whenever I polish, it leaves dark polish on my soles and feet. Is there anything I can do to avoid this, or am I doing anything wrong?
