Why is it so hard to find saved files on Mac

Old windows user just starting out with Mac. Finding it hard to find files, the "Recent" folder on mac doesn't actually show your recently downloaded files, and sorting isn't by date for some reason? Is there a way to make the file sorting system closer to how windows would operate? just feels more intuitive
