Something changed (Screenshots in my MacOS)

Earlier CMD+Shift+4 {plus manual area selection) autosaved a screenshot to the desktop with a file name like <screenshot xx.xx>. Now the same action does not autosave an image, and instead opens up the file save popup window where I need to inputs the file name and save location. This extra step is a bit annoying. Is there a way to revert to the old way of autosaving to desktop? This is Sequoia 15.1.1 on M2 Macbook Air.
