Sharing folders with Family AND backing up those folders… help.
What best practices to you use with your family to manage shared family folders (we have about a hundred (including sub-folders)) AND properly back them up with TimeMachine/ Carbon copy cloner/ any true backup system onto an external - not just syncing them in icloud? **Context:** My spouse and I both travel/ commute with work alot. So we access alot of shared ‘joint-family’ folders to ‘manage life’ while not physically in the same house, or if we’re on an ipad instead of lugging around a laptop etc. We also both had 2 laptops die on us about 10 years ago within a few months of each other (hard-drives.. pre- SSD drive era). So, we moved everything over to icloud, set up PARA file structure, so we could access all our family files (100’s of folders) on mobile devices, not just reliant on macs. However, iCloud sync is getting wobbly. **Issue: icloud is NOT a backup solution. It’s a syncing solution**. I need a ‘best-practice’ way to have loads of ‘shared’ folders (family folders) that I can also backup to an external drive. Using icloud is a hot mess - I have to download all those folders before every backup (eg, TimeMachine orCarboncopy cloner). Sharing folders on a network doesn’t work - as we commute/ travel constantly for work and getting back at 9pm to sync a file isn’t going to happen. **Risk Issue**: My icloud syncing has become increasingly buggy over the past year (I have 2TB paid for, family plan, nearing 800gb stored on there, extra buffer is for mobile device backups to icloud). Last year, my apple notes failed to sync on 2 devices for almost 3 months (yes it was escalated all the way up the engineering chain at apple - they couldn’t figure out what was happening - luckily I had previously requested a copy of all my notes via recovery option, so nothing lost, but not good). **Goal**: I want to be safe and sensible and have Docs/Folders on my computer first, so I can run carbon-copy (or any actual archiving / versioning backup). But also have some ‘practical’ way to share family folders for spouse to use / reference as well. **Open to all suggestions. Or examples of how you manage shared files with your family AND back them up properly (external drives). Happy to consider switching away from PARA file structure if that would make ‘joint family’ life file/folder mgmt and backups work better. TIA.**4
