MacBook sleep behavior questions

Hi I travel a fair amount and this has never been an issue. I can’t find anything definitive online about it - it seems people want it both ways. Here’s what’s going on: When I am finished working I always close the lid and walk away or put the computer in my backpack. It has always disconnected from my personal hotspot (iPhone) and not been an issue. Just recently, it stays connected. I’ve noticed hotspot staying connected while I am walking down the street. I even noticed it was still connected the following morning. My concern is having the hotspot active while the laptop is in my bag seems like a useless drain on both devices batteries. Does anyone know how to make it disconnect after lid close? I feel it’s not fully going to sleep when the lid closes. I did confirm even when clicking sleep from the apple menu, it still remains connected.
