Is 'Joshua Root' allowed to run in background -- safe ?

Have been installing macports for bunch of opensource software that I needed on my new Mac Mini, and this morning I noticed a notification warning me of this thing called 'Joshua Root' being setup to run in the background. Upon searching around looks like it is a piece of software installed as part of macports, but I didn't (yet) find any information on what it does. So my question, in case anyone here knows the answer: * What exactly is it i.e. what is it's purpose, what is it meant to do ? * What happens if you disable it from being allowed to run in the background ? * Is it safe to keep being allowed to run in the background ?
