Cryptic Characters and Blank Pages When Printing?

Does anyone know anything about the error of printing cryptic characters and blank pages? When this occurs, I have to switch off the printer completely and empty the print queue otherwise all my paper is used up. This happens both when printing from the Pages app and when printing PDFs. It's not constant (thankfully), but it's happened a few times now. Does anyone know about this error or have had similar experiences?
