Upgrading MacBook Air 2020

Complete Mac noob here. Trying to install xcode on my daughter's MacBook Air 2020. Says it can't because it's 12.7.1 and needs to be at least on 14.5. It gives me the option to upgrade to 15.2 but when trying this it just hangs. Read a few posts that suggests booting in safe mode fixes it but I've tried this and still hangs + (see pic). Any Ideas on how to troubleshoot or other workarounds I can try? Thanks!
