Remap the § key to act as AltGr (switch to diacritics)
It took me a bit to adapt to the MacOS keyboard on my new MB Pro with the ISO keyboard, but literally the only thing I could not adapt to was the lack of "that specific keyboard layout that is insanely good" for my language. On Linux and Windows, the layout I use is basically the US layout with the AltGr transforming some of the keys into their diacritic counterparts. Now, I have found a layout online and I am currently using that, but I don't like that both option keys work as the layout shifters. Even worse option+Q is a common diacritic, but it is so damn close to command+Q, which closes apps. I have made the mistake multiple times. :-) But what I see is an utterly useless key, namely the §/± key in the top left, next to the 1. I cannot express how much I don't care about the paragraph sign, nor about the plusminus. What I would care instead is to either: 1. Use that key as a layout modifier, so that I can add my diacritics. 2. Remap the \~/\` key there (aka where it should be) and use the original location as the modifier. Neither is ergonomic and I would have to do a bit of finger Twister to get them, but hey, command+C/V is pretty bad as well, but I have to live with it on macos, so I don't mind getting one more, I guess. I know about Ukelele, as I have used it to update the layout file I've found online to something that matches the current-day Mac keyboard layout. **Edit**: I do have to say I like macos quite a bit, and I am not willing to change it just because it doesn't have "the good layout" and it has cryptic acrobatic shortcuts for things that should have been button, or are standard shortcuts on any other platform. Between the smooth experience, the UNIX OS, the lack of Windows privacy bullshit, the elegance of how stuff works, I enjoy working with it quite a lot. And the hardware is exquisite. While the same specs can be found for cheaper on a Windows laptop, it won't run Linux good enough, and the last 1% of polish will still not be there, no matter how premium the device is. But this is another story for another time.3
