Password Recovery for user on Encrypted Disk
So I pulled out my old macbook air running OS X 10.11.4. I forgot the password for the only user I had set up on there but the device was registered with my Apple ID. I get an option to reset the password using the Apple ID, so I kick that process off and the following scenario unfolds. Here are the screens I get: 1. Enter your Apple ID and Password (done) 2. Complete 2FA (done) // I've now successfully verified my Apple ID and the process to reset the user password begins. It's an encrypted disk so I see the following two screens related to accessing the disk 3. "Recovering FileVault Key" 4. "A Recovery Key was found matching the volume "Macintosh HD". Examining users on "Macintosh HD"... // I now expect to see a screen asking me to reset my password, but this screen never appears. Instead it jumps straight to.... 5. "Your user account password has been reset. You may reboot and sign in using your new password." Any ideas on what might be happening here? I talked to Apple Support but they just had me try various recovery modes without addressing the core issue: My Apple ID is able to unlock the disk and examine the users, but the recovery flow seems to be skipping the step to let me actually reset my password. Any advice?3
