mac os software update not starting?

I’m trying to upgrade my mac os but when I press ‘Upgrade Now’ the bar stays gray and frozen, then I get an error. I’ve tried updating from safe mode but the same thing happens. How do I get this update to start? (I turned on the automatic updates but it didn’t start updating so I tried to do it manually)
