How do you represent the “Return” or the ”Enter” or the ⏎ key?
A simple question blows up in a good way. We can talk about the words "Return" and "Enter", or we can look at its icons, or we can incorporate both words or icons in our discussions, and there's even multiple ways manufacturers have represented the Return or Enter keys that are on a keyboard. Even the fact that some will call it an Enter key while others call it a Return key splits camps. **Here's my bottom line, though. After reading this, respond with an answer that has the icon you use for the Enter or Return key.** How do you get the symbol appearing in the text stream? Here's the layman's hack: do a google search on the icon you're looking for, "enter key symbol" and when you get 10,000 answers, open a page, copy the inline image icon you like and copy and paste it in. That's how I used to type the "infinity" symbol. ∞ The nice thing about copy-'n'-pasting is it's handling a lot of the unseen, bits and bytes that address its encoding, all the different ISO standards that have to do with ASCII or unicode progress that will never end. Want to learn about the Mac's implementation? The images below are a primer for those yet uninitiated. This is intended to be helpful, but even though I'm calling it a primer, it's incomplete. If you type "emoji" into the find field for System Settings dialog box, you'll get the following UI. https://preview.redd.it/bzm9xancg1ae1.jpg?width=727&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=103da8948a291e45110fab54504448f771be63d0 Notice how you have to select the "Show input menu in menu bar" toggle before it shows in the menu bar, as shown in the screen capture. Then when you go to the menu bar and select the "Show emoji and symbols" option, you're presented this cornucopia of graphic wonder in the following image below: ***Show the Character Viewer Option*** Notice how an option there allows you to—*if you have the extended keyboard*—press the fn key to show the Character Viewer—that's your ace up your sleeve. I'm assuming if you DON'T have the extended keyboard, you'll still have options available to make the Character Viewer open using the keyboard shortcut of your choice. Cool. If you look even closer, there's a *Search* field for you to type the english word for what symbol you're trying to find. It's not foolproof for searching, and it fails at times, but it's a pretty good helper when it works. https://preview.redd.it/gjel3uiog1ae1.jpg?width=727&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f66f38e4ce6abb91e1277669ba47864950c93e7 Interestingly, if I press ⌘-spacebar for Spotlight to look for “Character Viewer” it doesn't find it anywhere. This seems like an oversight, Apple. ;-)4
