Help to format a very old MacBook

Hello, whenever we try to start this Mac, this screen with "?" emblem shows, after we reboot, Apple sign shows up and won't start, it just stuck in Apple screen, then we trying to reboot again, "?" screen shows up again. We searched the web but we don't know anything about Macs, can anyone help us on this topic, how to clean format this thing?
