Desktop and Documents files disappear when I disable iCloud sync

This is really annoying. I have zero reason to need for iCloud to meddle with my desktop and documents folders. It was forced on me with the newest OS update. I tried to disable it but then all my files disappear. Anyone know how to simply deactivate the syncing and keep the files where they are? Thank you.
