All data stored in the cloud

I have all my data in the cloud (various services/locations). Curious, is TimeMachine really needed? Lately, I keep getting a message that TimeMachine failed to complete/run. I have it set to run daily. Thoughts... Equipment: Mac mini M1, with the latest OS.
