Make holidays great again! Recommendations for good plum cake in Lucknow (& a small guide)
Blame it on pop culture or convent school years, holiday season gets me pumped and it ain't christmas without plum/rum cakes. I moved to lucknow not too long ago and had to do my fair share of research to find some. I tried a few places but I know I haven't hit the gold yet and that's where I ask for your help. As a matter of fact, I prefer home baked ones since nothing comes close IMHO, I don't have a lot of contacts here (pss take the hint, HMU, I love the cake) Also, for people want to try it from the bakeries, here’s a short list of all the cakes I have tried in Lucknow in past two years with my two cents (in no particular order): Since the quality might differ across the outlets, I am mentioning the outlets I tried the cakes from 1- Hazelnut Bakery (Aliganj last year, Alambagh this year): Tried their cakes 2nd year in a row. Liked their plum cake better than rum cake (preferred rum cake last year). I realized the batch had slight bearing on the taste but good thing is they provide samples to taste. 2- Cherry Tree (Hazratganj outlet) / Mr Brown (Danbro) (Aashiyana outlet) / Good Bakery (Qaiserbagh outlet): Clubbing these because I really could not tell the difference. The cakes were not bad per say but I for oe would not order them again. No differentiating factor. I couldn't taste the spices at all. 3- Theobroma : Tried it last year and it IMHO was better than the Serial no 2. You could taste the spices, esp the candied ginger. However, I could not find any option weighing less than 350 gms. Since I usually eat by myself, couldn’t order again. 4- Sweet Truth: Absolutely no. The amount of tutti frutti it had still haunts me. Was way too sweet for my liking. 5- Mouth wide shut: Have loved their cupcakes in the past so had high expectations and they did not disappoint. Least sweet the cakes in the list. Really liked it but it isn't available this year as of now 6- Lulu Hypermart This colored me surprise. The cake was very cheap (almost 1/3rd of Hazelnut plum cake) but held right up to the hazelnut plum cake. 7- Sugarfrolic (homebaker) This was my favourite of the lot. It felt like a warm hug and transported me back to my school days. The orange zest was perfect added to the mix and the rum soaked resins balanced out the sugar. Unfortunately, she stopped baking last year so could only have it once. Special mention: Stollen from u/Anstar24. Might feel out of place but hear me out. This was the best thing i had last year during the holiday season. Swiggy genie costed me 200 rupee cz of the distance but if you're near gomti nagar, do try it as the delivery price would be reasonable. While you are at it, try his sourdough bread too if available Hope it was useful to someone. Now the ball's in your court. Help a friend... And yes, Happy Holidays!3
