How has gig economy (part-time, freelance, etc) treated you?

For those who are in the gig economy (freelance, part time, etc.), why did you choose it? I’ve been hearing many criticism in terms of exploitation; what is your take on it? Does your choice in the job have anything to do with discrimination in typical work environments? And since taking up a job in gig economy, do you face any form of discrimination?
