Pappaanji or Paapaanji ? (The way we pronounce it)

Was at fort kochi today asking the committee members of Gala De Fort Kochi (Cochin Carnival) what it was and even they gave me both answers. Some call it Pappaanji while others call it Paapaanji. Everyone was quite confident with their answer. I know the word comes from Portugese language but can't seem to find a definite answer.
