Demanding Money in the name of Christmas Carol.
Being born and brought up in Kochi, Christmas Carol was an integral part of growing up. Me and my friends would literally wait for Christmas to arrive to go for Carol. It was so much fun and everyone in the neighbourhood used to enjoy it. We always made sure not to hurt or disturb anyone. Even though we used to get money, we made sure that they are giving wholeheartedly and they also become part of our fun. Now coming to the situation, me and my friend were coming back home in his car when we noticed a group of young lads blocking the road and demanding money from people in the name of Christmas Carol. They were literally dancing in the middle of the road causing public nuisance and can clearly tell most of them were high. Well, we kind off let it go as this is once in a year occasion and cherished our childhood memories. They were not letting anyone pass until they were given money. But still, we saw it as fun and google payed them the amount and left. We then stopped at a coffee shop (small outdoor chayakkada) for tea. After few minutes, these guys came to the shop and started demanding money from the customers. They were all playing loud music and were dancing disturbingly while people were having food. Then one of the guy came and asked my friend for money and then he left when we informed him that we already paid. Now, another guy came, who was not at all in his sense and started demanding money. We decided to keep quiet and enjoy our tea and thats when he said to my friend that "Ninte adutha varsham mudinju pokum (your next year will be doomed". He didn't stop there and went on to tell his friend that "Avanu cash thannal entha. Tharathavare O*kki vidanam". He then came back and again said same thing. I was literally angry but since we were out numbered we decided to keep ourselves calm and not to cause a scene. These type of events not only put bad image to Kochi but also to the innocence of Christmas Carol. We could clearly see now many people actually don't entertain christmas carols anymore compared to back in the days. How do you guys see Christmas Carol and what you guys would have done in such a scenario ?3
