Can Jhanak get any worse?
Honestly, can this show get any worse? My biggest problem with it is that it had the potential to be great, but the writers absolutely ruined it. The most frustrating part is that the show has such interesting side characters—characters so rich and layered that you could dedicate an entire episode to each of them and build compelling storylines. Take the Bose family, for example: Shubho, an elite lawyer, built his fortune by exploiting another family, which explains his obsession with class and his manipulative use of Srishti and Arshi to climb the social ladder. Shubho’s wife, a rich and status-obsessed snob, married him solely for his wealth and social standing. Jethu, the hardworking and honest elder brother, sacrificed his own life to raise Shubho, who now refuses to acknowledge his contributions. Choton, the youngest brother, lives in the shadow of Shubho and has lost his own sense of identity. These dynamics make so much sense when you consider the family’s history: a mother obsessed with status and wealth, contrasted with a grounded, ethical father. This dynamic explains why Shubho turned out corrupt while the other brothers retained their integrity. There’s so much to explore here, but the writers lazily glossed over it. Their dysfunctional family dynamic also explains why characters like Ani and Laal turned out the way they did. Ani, who always credits Jethu and Boro Maa for his upbringing, is kind-hearted on the surface, but Laal—raised by the same people—became equally horrible. Why? There’s so much depth to explore, yet the writers refused to do so. The side characters are so fascinating on their own that Jhanak and Ani’s love story wasn’t even necessary to make the show interesting. Now, about Jhanak and Ani: the writers absolutely destroyed them. While the show tries to portray Arshi as the villain, she really isn’t. She gave up eight years of her life for a loser like Ani, whose “love” for her sister was sparked by watching her dance. Seriously, what a joke. Ani wasn’t wrong to feel a sense of responsibility towards Jhanak after marrying her, but the story could have shown Ani and Arshi falling apart naturally due to the cracks already present in their relationship. Instead, inserting Jhanak into the middle of it all only ruins both her character and Ani’s. Ani’s relationship with Jhanak is indefensible. It’s essentially Ani emotionally—and later physically—cheating on Arshi. Gross. Jhanak plays the victim card to destroy Ani and Arshi’s relationship, and Ani? He’s just pathetic, clinging to whichever woman is nearby, whether it’s Jhanak or Arshi. Ani always loved Arshi, so what changed? There’s no logical progression here. Arshi herself was a good character in the beginning. Yes, her mother’s toxic influence shaped her emotions, but her father’s upbringing made her strong and compassionate, which is why she supported Jhanak at first. Arshi genuinely believed in Ani when he brought Jhanak home and trusted that he wouldn’t betray her. Ani’s actions drove her to madness, and honestly, I don’t blame her one bit. At this point, I hope Jhanak and Ani get married and rot in hell. There’s no way they could live happily after ruining so many lives.5
