Weirdest trope ever

Can we talk about how weird and stupid is the whole trope of keeping someone hidden in the house for many years just because they're mentally ill or something. They're be like we're protecting our family's reputation 😐. Worse, the person may be hidden for ten years and nobody in the house knows except for the person responsible until the snooping around fl gets there. Weird af, I swear. Hate it.
