Trust Ekta Kapoor to ruin any of her likeable characters
My god this woman….UGHHHHH So I was rewatching Pavitra Rishta (Generation 3) and the male lead, Naren Karmarkar, just stole my heart. Like omg the character was written so well: A genius businessman who is mentally unstable after witnessing his girlfriend’s accident now believes his employee is his ‘Ahana’. The character itself was a romantic, innocent and cute guy who just wants Ankita (the female lead, aka ‘Ahana’) to be happy. He cares for her, makes sure she is happy no matter what, helps her family financially etc. There were so many entertaining moments, like Naren calling his father-in-law ‘chini-chor padosi’ and his elaborate plans to set up Mansi (main lead’s sister) with the man she loves. His chemistry with the female lead was also amazing. It showed a one-sided romance turn into live and admiration from both Ankita and Naren. On top of that, he was brave. He even put his own brother in jail because he raped his sister-in-law. The character was written to show that even ‘pagal’ people can be good people, and can live normal lives. But Ekta had to use her ‘character-ruining’ magic on Naren. She introduced a love triangle by announcing that Ankita’s cousin, Pari, is Naren’s real ‘Ahana’. As soon as Naren discovers his real Ahana, he faints, and then wakes up with zero memories of what happened in the past 2 years of his life since witnessing the accident, including his marriage with Ankita. And of course, no one even thought of mentioning his married life to him. He is fed with information that he and Ankita were a part of a contract marriage, and so he acts horrible towards her. This all happens when Ankita is pregnant with Naren’s child btw. Ankita then runs away after realising that Naren’s happiness is with Pari. 5 years later, she has lost her child, whereas Naren and Pari have a five year old girl. Pari gets into an accident which puts Ankita’s fiance in a coma. Naren bribes the policeman to close this case, causing Ankita to come back in order to ‘give justice to her fiance’. Now they live under the same roof, with Pari being absolutely horrible with Ankita, Naren pampering Pari and Ankita sobbing in her diary about how much she STILL loves Naren. What annoys me about Ekta and this storyline is that there was ABSOLUTELY ZERO NEED TO DESTROY THIS CHARACTER!! Now, you barely see Naren smile, and its unbelievable how a ‘pagal’ man puts his own brother in jail for raping someone whereas a ‘normal and recovered’ man is bribing police officers to cover up his wife’s crime. The difference between ‘pagal’ Naren and ‘normal’ Naren is clear. The only redeeming quality of the cured version is the fact that he is a good dad to his daughter, and knows how to handle kids well. I mean, if Ankita-Naren were endgame, then why ruin Naren’s character so much? It doesn't make any sense.3
