Biased selections cannot make careers but can definitely ruin them
Gautam Gambhir got a bunch of KKR staff with him to the Indian team, some of them being arguably less potent than the other options. While one can understand that it might have to do with the tempo and the environment that the coach wants to create is familiar to the guys he got in from his IPL team. Having coaches with less experience than the players themselves leads to players finding time with other mentors outside of the national duty, like we saw with Virat and Bangar. But it’s still not a major issue. What happens when the same starts happening with players? Siraj gets dropped from the CT for not having death bowling skills, even though India lost their other new ball bowler (Bumrah) to an injury. Now they basically don’t have 2 of the 3 fast bowlers from the WC, and WC was a major success for each and every player (except Surya, who is fairly left out). Bringing in Varun as a 1D spinner into an ODI squad which already features Kuldeep Yadav, along with Jaddu and Axar, is a biased selection. Bringing in an inexperienced Harshit for an ICC event ahead of Siraj, is another biased selection. You already have an inexperienced ODI pacer in Arsh and that is fitting enough, why another inexperienced pacer? Experience is such a big thing for Indian fast bowlers, given that they dont have express pace. And what has Siraj done wrong? Yes he did not find wickets occasionally, but did he bowl stupid lengths or lost pace or did not look sharp? Nope! If Varun and Harshit can make an ODI career from here, great, but what happens to Siraj now? Is he done with ODIs? It has been such a bad decision by the board to make GG the coach of the Men’s team. You should always get a coach who loves the sport more than his ego and is humble through and through. I was hoping for Laxman to take it from Dravid but was not to be. Wishing luck to players like Siraj, Ruturaj, KL, Iyer, who may not have any / good relations with Gambhir. Dark days until he is the coach!3
