We Only Support Athletes When They Win Big—This Needs to Change
I've noticed something about how we as a society treat our athletes. We only seem to celebrate them when they achieve something big on an international level. Before that, hardly anyone notices their efforts, struggles, or progress. Take Gukesh, for example. For those who don't know, he's a chess player who recently made headlines after a significant victory. But let's be honest, how many of us even knew his name before that? Probably very few. It’s disheartening because these athletes dedicate their lives to their craft, often without any recognition or support. Then, when they finally succeed, everyone jumps on the bandwagon, claiming to feel "proud." But if we weren’t there to support them during their journey, do we even deserve to take pride in their achievements? Our athletes need consistent encouragement—not just after they've "made it." Let’s start acknowledging and supporting them during their journeys, not just when they reach their destination. What do you think? How can we change this?4
