How to track a lost phone?

So today my father lost his phone (pickpocket) during commute to Kosgi, Mahbubnagar. Arey there any legit ways to get hold of the phone? It doesn't have find my phone installed and the pickpocketers switched it off as of now. He has a synced google account on the phone, if it's of any help. Thanks in advance.
