Washing machine mode

My 5 y old washing machine rods got worn out & a technician fixed new ones. I used to set synthetic/daily mode but he said to put cotton normal mode only. He also said if I set any other mode then I have to put only 2 pairs. Is this true? It's IFB 7.5kg load
