Why are the Gods viewed as beardless?

I am aware that Śiva is sometimes depicted within artwork possessing facial hair and Brahmā predominantly depicted as bearded, showing his age, and Kṛṣṇa clean-shaven representing youth. My question is about all of the Gods altogether. Is it symbolic, traditional, or an artistic choice, if not all of the above?
