How are different deities/gods/goddesses an "embodiment" of God?

I am a Sikh and I feel that there are many parallels between the two religions. I've always believed that Hinduism is a monotheistic religion despite the mention of many Gods/Goddesses. I am curious what these deities represent? Are they used to describe different qualities of God?
