Did meaning of Vanavasa change in Yugas?

Well,my first post here. Hopefully this is the right sub. So,I have this question in my mind-Was the meaning of Vanavasa was different in both Treta Yuga & Dwapar Yuga? In Treta,Ram, Laxman & Sita went for 14 years of Vanavasa. During this time they travelled a lot, from present day UP to present day Maharasthra, going to different forests & ashrams. In Dwapar,Pandavas & Draupadi went for Vanavasa for 12 years. However, they went to much nearer place relatively & spend 12 years there only. With only Arjun going far for tapa. They stayed in one place only,I believe. Only for the 13th year for Agyatvasa they went to Matsya Kingdom. So did the criteria of Vanavasa change in mean time or there was some different reason as to why Shree Ram travelled so far away from Ayodhya? Thanks in advance.
