Temple visit Hi there. I'm an English Hellenist that would like to visit a Hindu temple in London. I would like to know what to expect, and perhaps some things to say to be as respectful to the worshippers and pandit as possible. Salutem vobis atque a dis beamini. 1 3 replies
I was curious about Durga but have no one to ask. Sorry if this is not the right place to ask. I am an American who has have virtually no access to cultures outside of my country's imperialist/colonialist roots, and didn't know where else to ask. I stumbled across this goddess while looking at a what names mean site (associated with the name Maya?), then found [her wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durga). That's all the reliable information I could find on my own. It was suggested I look at the [Devi Mahatmya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devi_Mahatmya) but that's has a lot of context that's alien to me... 3 3 replies
How do you celebrate maha shivratri at home? As someone outside India The question is pretty self explanatory, I don’t have anything that could be used for puja, no temples I can go to close enough to me. What do you guys do :) 4 1 replies
Death in Hinduism: Escape or Destiny? Yes, in Hinduism, death is seen as part of a larger cosmic cycle—Samsara (the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth). Most people don’t want another life because existence in the material world is filled with suffering (Dukkha), attachments, and karma. The ultimate goal is Moksha—liberation from this cycle and union with the supreme consciousness (Brahman). Different paths are described to achieve this: Jnana Yoga (Path of Knowledge) – Understanding the self as Brahman. Bhakti Yoga (Path of Devotion) – Surrendering to a deity (like Vishnu, Shiva, or Devi). Karma... 5 0 replies
How difficult is it to learn Sanskrit to read the holy scriptures? I am not indian nor I speak any indian languages but I'm a Hindu, and unfortunately very few scriptures have a translation to my native language, and the translation sometimes tries to treat the scriptures as a "philosophy" and dismisses/ignores it's religiousness (sorry if that's not the right term) for example, I bought a copy of the Bhagavad Gita and right at the beginning they said that they didn't want to approach this book as something religious (which it is!) which made me be uncertain of how accurate the... 1 10 replies

How to worship Lord Shiva tomorrow (Maha Shivratri), if we will be unable to fast and visit a temple? Please suggest So, for some reason, we won't be able to fast or visit a temple tomorrow on Maha Shivratri (Though we never say never). I just wanted to ask, what should I do to make my puja equally effective at home tomorrow? I am thinking of Playing Shiv Sahasranama tomorrow to make the home atmosphere and vibes positive (As I am new to both Sri Vishnu Sahasranama and Shiv Sahasranama, so proper chanting will not be possible as of now), and also chant the panchakshari mantra 108 times. Is this... 1 3 replies
How do I do"do" puja? Sorry for the mistake in the title but I can't change it now. It's meant to say "How do I "do" Puja?" Hello all, I hope this is the right place to ask - there's a tad of backstory. My grandmother (by marriage) has sent me a small Ganesh with some sanctified water for my new home (this weekend just gone). The water is from a Mandir in Wembly, London and was sancified at a abishek to the image of Nilkanth Varni. I asked her daughter (my stepmum) what... 5 2 replies
Lord Ganesh says to love/respect our parents, but I can’t help but feel intense hatred towards my mom My mom never really wanted a daughter, she only wanted sons. Imagine her disappointment when I was born (the first born daughter). I am 36 now and I’ve pretty much spent my whole life trying to appease and cater to her. She was never affectionate with me, but she would openly pamper my younger brother. She never raised a single hand on my brother, but she gave me beatings, at times almost to the brink of death. She has left me all alone at home, even when I was... 3 13 replies
