Why didn't Krishna ji stop the mahabharat war?

I mean no offense to anyone but today one of my friends who claims to be an atheist asked me that if Krishna ji is a god why did he let so many people die when he had all the powers to stop it and settle the dispute. I was left quite answerless at the moment and so I want to hear your all's opinion on it
