Air India BOM-SFO flying unusual route

Today afternoon I heard Lage aeroplane noise passing over my Town, out of curiosity I checked it was AI 777 enroute San Francisco, this was the first time I was seeing a US Bound flight flying over my Town. Is this something unusual or they keep changing routes based on various factors?
