Then & Now - A small rant

Then & Now - A small rant !! This is my first experience living with a flatmate. The initial photos are of the place when I had stepped in the house. Since I was moving from a different city on an urgent basis, I had to finalise a place. I decided to get the place sorted. And this is what the place looks now. Since it required a lot of effort and time & I was beyond annoyed that the pics shared were absolutely inaccurate, I had to message the flatmate that “this is an absolute nightmare and complete waste of time if two adults cant keep the house clean and sorted” Flatmate, who apparently is a professor at a B-school, replied “you want to keep the place as taj mahal, it’s your choice. I confine myself to my room. I am not supposed to be responsible” I just don’t grasp this. How does one choose to live in disarray and in dirt & be okay with it ?
