Stay Recommendations for Solo Traveller

Hey, I'm travelling to Chandigarh this Sunday and I need a place to stay for 1/2 nights. I haven't exactly planned the whole thing but the trip is for educational purposes (archi student). I'd also like to go to Shimla via Kalka if I have an extra day so I was just looking for a safe place to crash which is reasonably priced? Any place that's close enough to go to all of the important places or maybe the railway station. Also is this all safe for a solo female traveller? I'm totally lost
